Bridal Accessories – Shops Near Schaumburg

Tema: Be temos — julyli @ 18:52

I’m looking to find bridal accessories, specifically veil, tiara/comb and shoes. I’m also looking for bridesmaid jewelry (not too expensive but not cheap like Claires either).
Any suggestions?
I don’t want to go to David’s Bridal or House of Brides, I’ve already been there. I would prefer places I can just walk into w/o an appt so I can just look at stuff on my own. I’ve been to DSW in Schaumburg for shoes and they don’t have a big selection.
So if you know of a good place, it doesn’t even have to be a bridal salon, just somewhere that has a good selection of accessories for tiara/comb, jewelry and shoes (that can pass for bridal shoes) I would appreciate it!!

Answer by itsmelynzi
I really haven’t been looking at shoes too much (my groom is only about an inch taller than me, I’ll be wearing slippers), BUT Crystal Bride in Geneva seemed to have a decent selection, along with Veiled.. something. I can’t remember the name, but it’s on “State” (Roosevelt) just east of Crystal Bride. They had quite a few accessories. Also, in the mall, there’s a place called Total wedding that has some stuff, though I think it’s more along the line of claires..

That’s about all I have for you right now. Good Luck!

Ivory wedding shoes

Tema: Be temos — julyli @ 18:50

Ivory is a pretty standard wedding colour, thanks to its introduction into bridalwear to replace the starkness of traditional white. While white makes comebacks now and again, and no-one can deny the freshness of a crisp white dress, ivory is more flattering for more brides. If you’re looking for ivory wedding shoes to match your ivory dress, look no further! We’ve got something to satisfy all budgets.

While ivory is a pretty familiar colour for those selling bridal shoes, remember to ask for a piece of the material from your dress, so that you can take it with you when you look for your shoes. There’s nothing worse than ordering ivory shoes but then finding out your dress is cream, or vice versa, so prepare ahead.

7 Timeless Principles of Achievement

Tema: Be temos — julyli @ 23:18

1.jpg

To get ahead today, you need constant improvement. Life is a race and if you aren’t running, you will fall behind.

The knowledge required today is vastly different than the knowledge you needed 20 years ago and in 5 years time most of what you know today will be obsolete.

Through all this there is one thing that is constant. One thing we can trust. That is the principles that drive achievement. The keys of success never change because people don’t. Noah Bennet in the TV-series Heroes puts it well “Things change, but people do not.”

As long as people control the world, the principles that set the successful apart from the regular will remain the same.

When playing baseball as a kid I noticed these principles at work. We used to play a pickup game every day after school. As in every group some of the kids had a knack for baseball and others didn’t. What was interesting to watch was how the group evolved. Some of the kids would improve at a faster rate then the rest, they seemed to improve in everything quicker than average. Both in school and sports.

I saw the same thing happen again and again when ghd working in sales. Some of the salesmen hired just did better than others, even though at the outset they might have been much worse.

The reason is that all these people either actively or instinctively followed these 7 principles.

1. It isn’t how much you work, but how you work that makes the difference

Being at the office for 10 hours straight doesn’t mean you got the most done and, what is more important, it doesn’t mean that you brought the most value to your employer.

If you are going to be successful it is important that you spend your time as wisely as possible. Make sure you are always working on your highest value task, bringing value to your employer and yourself.

Working on time management skills that make you able to produce more in less time is a shortcut that will boost you on your path.

2. Hard work pays off

With step one understood, hard work does pay off. Spending an hour more at the office than your colleagues does mean that you get more done. Working the whole day, instead of taking breaks by the coffee machine, makes you a lot more productive. And being the first into the office every morning so that you have time to plan your day will give you the ease of mind you need to produce.

3. The only thing holding you back is your imagination

We can do anything, as long as we set our mind to it. I want to give you an example from the movie “A Knights Tale” with Heath Ledger. When Heaths character, William, is a young boy he is apprenticed to a knight. His dream was to become a knight himself, something that should have been far out of reach as he wasn’t of noble birth, which was required to compete.

His father tells him that he can, if he believes. If he believes it so strongly and works with all his might, it will happen.

As it turns out, he becomes a knight and his dreams are realized.

Of course this is a story, but the moral of the story is based on fact. If you believe something powerfully enough, you will find a way to make your dream reality.

4. Leading a balanced life is the key

A trap many fall into is that they don’t find balance in their life.

You are not successful if you aren’t successful in all 4 major areas of your life: finance, career, family and health.

Succeeding in one doesn’t compensate for failure in another. Spend time on all 4 areas and the synergy effect will help you become more successful in each area as well.

5. Improve every day

Constant improvement is crucial to your ed hardy success. If you are to become the best you have to continuously improve. Life is a race and if you aren’t running, someone else will pass you.

6. It isn’t your genes that determine your level of success

This was at first hard for me to grasp before I understood it. It isn’t what you are born with that determines how far you will go. It is your discipline, your motivation and your hunger that will make you successful.

Just like I saw with my friends, the only one of us to make the minor leagues was the kid we used to stick out in right field because he could neither throw, catch or run.

7. Be proactive

Always be in charge of your own life. Be in the driver’s seat. Don’t let the circumstances you find yourself in, the stimuli thrust upon you, control you. Control the circumstances and create your own brakes.

Conclusion

By following these principles you have the basis on which ugg boots you can form your success, the foundation on which to build and realize your dreams. Never give up because whatever and whoever you want to be, you can succeed, if you chose to.

Some pet owners take animals to their graves

Tema: Be temos — julyli @ 23:17

1.jpg

Ron Lee, 44, is so committed to his basset hound, Winston, that he’s made arrangements to be buried with Winston’s ashes when he dies

We’ve all heard of people who love their pets too much. But what about loving your pet to death?

Such was the case with Tom Tom, a healthy 2-year-old Yorkshire terrier who was euthanized and laid to rest last March after its late owner, Donald Ellis, left explicit instructions that his beloved Yorkie be put down and buried with him.

While startling, it wasn’t an anomaly. Tom Tom isn’t the only pet to find his days numbered after an owner shuffles off this mortal coil.

Emily Kinney, a 32-year-old communications manager from Dallas, says her grandmother sat everyone down after her husband’s funeral and announced she wanted her Shih-tzu, Sam, to be put to sleep and buried with her when she passed.

“She said if she should die before her dog, my dad’s first job was to take Sam and have him put to sleep,” she says. “She wanted to be buried with her best friend. She knew that there were plenty of people in the family that would take him but she wanted her best friend with her.”

Of course, Sam was hardly a pup. The dog was 17 years old, deaf, blind and prone to “accidents”. But Kinney says discussing the dog’s future (or lack thereof) was still unsettling.

“Sam was not a healthy dog so it wasn’t exactly cruel,” she says. “It was almost funny to be talking about putting him to sleep while he was in the room, clueless about his fate.”

Luckily, Sam died first so the family wasn’t forced to make that long drive to the vet. But it was a different story for K.C., a 14-year-old tortoiseshell cat left behind after its 84-year-old owner, Elue Olvera, died last November.

“My mom told me, ‘Either you take her or put her down. She can’t live with anybody. She’s very picky,’” says Bea Gonzales, a 56-year-old school bus driver from San Antonio, Texas.

Gonzales says she couldn’t take the cat (she had other pets) but couldn’t bring herself to put K.C. down either, so she tried letting the cat live on in her mother’s home with a niece who’d moved in. Unfortunately, K.C. became listless — and then began to fight with the niece’s cats. Eventually, Gonzales made that final trip to the vet.

“My mom and that cat were two peas in a pod,” she says. “It’s like they were married. I loved my mom and wanted to respect her last wishes. And I feel like she was up there saying, ‘It’s about time.’ She knew K.C. couldn’t live with anybody, that she wouldn’t be happy.”

Madeline Bernstein, president of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Los Angeles, says she’s heard all kinds of reasons why people want their animals euthanized after their death.

“They think no one will love them as much as they do,” she says. “That’s the more narcissistic reason — it sounds like it’s in the best interest of the pet but, clearly, when you think about what they’re asking you to do you have to wonder if it is. And some feel their pet will suffer, that there’s such a strong bond between them the pet will grieve and be miserable and fail to thrive.”

‘It’s what my brother wanted’

That was the case with Ellis, who asked his sister to euthanize his 2-year-old Yorkshire terrier after his death because “nobody would love him like he did.”

“Tom Tom was grieving for my brother,” says Marilyn McDaniel, 58, of Star City, Ark., who consented to her late brother’s wishes. “They were very close. I’ve gotten a lot of grief for doing this, but it’s what my brother wanted.”

Other people worry that the animal might be a burden to friends or relatives, particularly if it’s an older animal with health problems, says Bernstein. But no matter what the reason or rationale, she says people who request their animal be put down following their death should stop to consider just what it is they’re asking.

“Killing something is not easy,” she says. “It’s asking a lot of your survivors to follow those wishes.”

It may also be difficult to find a veterinarian who will comply with the pharaoh-like request, she says, particularly if the pet’s young and healthy.

“It’s not illegal to put down a healthy pet but ghds you have to be able to sleep at night,” she says. “A vet may have an ethics issue with it.”

Planning ahead

According to Emily Patterson-Kane, an animal welfare scientist for the American Veterinary Medical Association, the AVMA has no specific policy on the subject — but they do have principles of veterinary medical ethics.

“When in doubt, we always go back to the veterinarian’s oath,” she says. “Consider the needs of the patient. And the patient is not the human — the patient is the animal. We can’t tell people what to do with their animals, but a veterinarian is going to counsel as to what’s best for the animal.”

Dr. Tony Kremer, a Chicago-based veterinarian who owns five pet hospitals, says he finds the idea of taking an animal with you into death “inconceivable.”

“Obviously it’s a bit crazy,” he says. “I would rank it as saying ‘I want you to put my kids to sleep when I pass away so no one mistreats them.’”

Luckily, such practices are rare, he says, though relatives commonly come in with a deceased parents’ pet asking for euthanasia, even when the animal is healthy.

“When this happens, we do our best to steer them in the direction of putting the animal up for adoption,” he says. “Most people are glad to find there’s another option.”

Kramer also says by planning ahead, people can avoid all the drama.

“If you’re the caregiver of a pet, then you need to be responsible for setting up something, some plan for that pet if you’re unable to take care of it for whatever reason,” he says. “There are a lot of different rescue organizations. Or people can put money in their will so the pet will be taken care of in perpetuity.”

Chris Jones, a trust attorney of 40 years and founder of TrustedPetPartners.com, says pet trusts are another way to ensure an animal is taken care of after you’re gone.

“You choose a guardian and then you choose a watchdog — someone whose job it is to enforce the terms of the trust — and then you set aside money or other property that can be converted to money to pay for the care of the animals,” he says.

Prepaid pet insurance is yet another way to help make sure your ed hardy animal will be cared for.

As for those who worry that going against the deceased’s last wishes might be illegal, Jones recommends asking the court for advice.

“Legally, you’re supposed to carry out the instructions in the will, but whoever the executor is always has the opportunity to go to court and say, ‘It tells me to do this but I’m not so sure I should,’” he says.

Protesting a death order can work, too. In 1992, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police refused to carry out the instructions left by Clive Wishart, a Canadian man who stipulated in his will that his four horses be shot by the RCMP and buried after his death. The court found that “the destruction of four healthy animals for no useful purpose should not be upheld” and the horses were spared.

‘You don’t have to give the final solution’

Ron Lee, a 44-year-old TV reporter from Charlotte, N.C.,, says the idea of prematurely taking a pet with you to the grave is “repulsive” — although he definitely plans to be buried with his beloved basset hound, Winston.

“If Winston goes first, my wife and I will cremate him and put his ashes in a little shrine until I die,” he says. “Then Winston’s ashes will be put in my ugg boots  arms and buried with me.”

And if Lee goes first, Winston will live out his days in style, thanks to a “secret savings account.” After that, his ashes will be sprinkled over Lee’s grave.

“I can understand why people want to be buried with their pet but to cut its life short, that doesn’t make any sense,” he says. “There’s always someone who can help — some group, some organization. You don’t have to give the final solution to your dog or cat.”

Want to keep your wallet

Tema: Be temos — julyli @ 11:05

What would you do if you found a wallet on the street? Leave it? Take it to a police station? Post it back to the owner? Keep it, even?

The answer, scientists have found, depends rather more on evolution than morality.

Hundreds of wallets were planted on the streets of Edinburgh by psychologists last year. Perhaps surprisingly, nearly half of the 240 wallets were posted back. But there was a twist.

Richard Wiseman, a psychologist, and his team inserted one of four photographs behind a clear plastic window inside, showing either a smiling baby, a cute puppy, a happy family or a contented elderly couple. Some wallets had no image and some had charity papers inside.

When faced with the photograph of the baby people were far more likely to send the wallet back, the study found. In fact, only one in ten were hard-hearted enough not to do so. With no picture to tug at the emotions, just one in seven were sent back.

According to Dr Wiseman the result reflects a compassionate instinct towards vulnerable infants that people have evolved to ensure the survival of future generations. “The baby kicked off a caring feeling in people, which is not surprising from an evolutionary perspective,” he said.

Scientists argue that it would be difficult to genetically code for feeling empathy exclusively towards your own child and much easier to code for feeling empathy towards all children. If you find a baby alone, there is a good chance it belongs to you, making it an effective evolutionary trait, said Dr Wiseman.

In the study, 40 wallets were sent out in each photograph category as well as 40 containing a card suggesting that the owner had recently made a contribution to charity. A control batch contained no additional item.

Health Top Tips Nutrition Love Lifestyle Happiness Weight Loss

All of the wallets were stuffed with the same set of everyday items, including raffle tickets, discount vouchers, and membership cards. None of them contained money, however.

The wallets were mixed up randomly, and over a couple of weeks were secretly dropped on the streets in areas of high footfall, but well away from postboxes, litter bins, vomit, and dog faeces.

The researchers planted each wallet about a quarter of a mile apart to ensure that people would be unlikely to find more than one.

The baby photograph wallets had the highest return rate, with 88 per cent of the 40 being sent back. Next came the puppy, the family and the elderly couple, with 53 per cent, 48 and 28 respectively. At 20 per cent and 15, the charity card and control wallets had the lowest return rates.

Overall, 42 per cent of the wallets were posted back — more than the team had anticipated. “We were amazed by the high percentage of wallets that came back,” said Dr Wiseman.

Scientists have also found evidence for a baby instinct in brain scanning experiments. A recent study at the University of Oxford examined how people responded when they were shown photographs of baby or adult faces.

Even though all of the photographs were matched for attractiveness, activity in the section of the brain associated with empathy was much more responsive to the baby faces than to adult faces. The response happened too fast to be consciously controlled, according to the study.

Whatever the scientific explanation, the practical message is clear, said Dr Wiseman. “If you want to increase the chances of your wallet being returned if lost, obtain a photograph of the cutest baby you can find, and ensure that it is prominently displayed,” he said.

55 Ways to Get More Energy

Tema: Be temos — julyli @ 11:04

If you’re tired all the time, a change in what you eat (diet) or what you do all day (activity pattern) may be all you need to turn things around 180°.

You won’t be able to do everything on this list all the time — you’d tire yourself out trying to get more energy — but do try them all to see which ones work for you and your schedule. Add a few of these tips to your regular routine. Or mix them up to keep things interesting.

1. Change your socks for refreshment.

It’s an amazing trick. Bring a change of socks to work, and change your socks midway through the day (say, after lunch). You’ll be amazed at how much fresher you’ll feel. This trick is especially handy on days with lots of walking — like during a hike or family outing to the amusement park.

2. Rock out loud.

Whether you work alone or in a room with coworkers, a quick one-song rock out loud session is an effective way to beat back exhaustion.

In a cube farm? Get everyone to sing along! The key is to choose a song that everyone can sing along with. (I like Kokomo.) The energy boosting effect comes from bobbing your head and singing out loud. One song, 3 minutes. That’s a quick boost of adrenaline that lasts for a bit. You’ll be singing to yourself the rest of the never ending project delivery night.

3. Get rid of the stuffy nose.

If allergies have your sinuses blocked, you may be feeling more tired and cranky. An over-the-counter allergy medication should clear up your sinuses (and your mind).

4. Work with your body’s clock.

There is a natural ebb and flow of energy throughout the day. We start off sluggish after waking up, even after a solid 8 hours of sleep. Our energy peaks mid-morning, and it’s natural to want a siesta in the afternoon. We get a second spike of energy in the early evening, followed by our lowest energy point just before bedtime. Once you understand this natural rhythm of energy throughout the day, you can work on the important tasks during your peak hours and avoid early afternoon snoozefests (meetings).

5. Have a piece of chocolate.

Not too much, but if you’re going to have some candy, it might as well be chocolate. We get an endorphin buzz from chocolate (not to mention the energy boost from the slight bit of caffeine chocolate contains). Dark chocolate has more caffeine than milk chocolate.

6. Have an afternoon power snack.

A small healthy snack that is low in sugar and has protein and/or fiber a couple hours after lunch helps you finish off the day strong. Some suggestions:

    * mixed nuts
    * nonfat yogurt
    * apple and peanut butter
    * frozen berrie smoothie
    * trail mix
    * granola bar

7. Hit up the water cooler for inconsequential banter.

A little midday gossip and random banter is a great pick-me-up for your tired mind. It works because it gets your mind on zero-stress thoughts for a while. The mental break for just a few minutes will revitalize you.

8. Eat lots of berries.

Especially berries that are blue, red, or purple. The color comes from anthocyanins, a powerful antioxidant, that boosts energy. Any kind of berry will contain tons.

9. Wear brighter colors.

This trick is related to the mood you project to people, and the reciprocating mood they project towards you. If you wear dark, somber colors, you project a dark, somber attitude, and people will respond to you with a somber attitude. If you wear bright, happy colors, you’ll get that attitude projected towards you, which will boost your own mood and energy levels.

10. Take a power nap.

But do it in your chair. Don’t lie down on the sofa or you won’t get back up. Keep it short: 5-10 minutes max. Any longer and it will have the opposite effect of knocking you out for the rest of the day.

11. Flirt.

It’s fun, it’s harmless (keep it innocent), and it’s effective. Nothing quite gets the heart pumping like a little flirting.

12. Aromatherapy with lavender.

Research has shown that the lavender scent increases alertness. Test subjects were given math tests before and after 3 minutes of lavender aromatherapy. The group completed the tests faster and more accurately after aromatherapy.

13. Wake up at the same time everyday.

Including weekends. This sets your body clock. Otherwise, you’ll be wide awake when you should be asleep. Or worse, asleep when you should be awake (dozing off in a meeting is embarrassing). The key is to go to bed at the same time every night. If you need to reset your sleep cycle in one day, stop eating for the 16 hours before the time you want to wake up.

14. Drink lots of water.

Dehydration is a sinister cause of fatigue because it slowly creeps up on you. If you consistently drink less than 8 cups of water a day, you may be sluggish all the time. Get a 32 oz (1 quart, 4 cups) water bottle. Your goal is to polish off 2 of those a day. Try it for a week and see if your general energy level increases.

15. Use caffeine wisely.

Coffee and caffeinated sodas can boost your alertness, but be careful about letting it be a habitual crutch. The temptation to drink more caffeine to get even more energy will be strong. Eventually you’ll be downing 5 double-shot espressos a day just to function. Drink coffee earlier in the day to avoid insomnia, which will make the next day worse.

16. Avoid energy drinks.

Energy drinks provide a near-instant hyperactivity boost, but they always result in a crash. Energy drinks are like energy credit cards — you’re spending future energy to get short-term energy. The resulting energy deficit gets worse until you hit energy bankruptcy.

17. Eat low glycemic (low or complex carb) foods.

Trade in good, complex carbohydrates (low glycemic index) for the bad, simple carbs (sugar). Carbohydrates with a high glycemic index means the sugar is more easily digested by your body. That results in a spike in energy followed by a low-sugar crash.

High glycemic index foods to avoid include white bread, potato, and high sugar foods (like sodas). Low glycemic foods (the good carb foods) include fruits and vegetables, grains (eg., whole wheat bread), low-carb foods (eg., meats), and pasta. Check this chart of foods and their glycemic index before your next trip to the grocery store.

18. Eat more soluble fiber.

Soluble fiber is the kind that slows down the rate of absorption of sugars. It evens out your energy levels by preventing a sugar high and crash. (By the way, insoluble fiber is the kind that prevents constipation.) Don’t worry too much about which kind of fiber you’re getting — they’re both good for you. Rotate more high soluble fiber foods like nuts, grains, fruits, plant matter (vegetables), beans, and oats into your diet.

19. Get your Vitamin C.

Get a daily dose of citrus fruits (eg., orange juice in the morning) or a vitamin C tablet. Study after study shows the correlation between citric acid deficiency and chronic fatigue. Vitamin C also helps you absorb more nutrients from food.

20. Sniff some citrus.

In addition to the Vitamin C, citrus scents (like orange, lemon and lime) stimulate alertness. So lather on some of that lemon scented lotion.

21. Cover the B Vitamins.

B vitamins cover a range of bodily functions, but most B vitamins are involved in the process of converting blood sugar into usable energy. To ensure you get the proper amount of B vitamins, eat a balanced diet.

22. Quit smoking.

Ex-smokers frequently report an energy boost of 2-3x when they quit smoking. Nicotine affects your sleep, so you don’t get as good a night’s sleep. That makes you cranky, frustrated and tired the next day. Which leads to more smoking. It’s a vicious energy sapping cycle.

23. Play to relax.

Playing a game keeps your mind working (versus, say, watching TV), but doesn’t have any of the energy-sapping stresses of work. Go ahead and play that quick game of Scrabble on Facebook, but have a strict time limit if you don’t want your boss to say something.

24. Eat smaller, more frequent meals.

Snack throughout the day. By eating smaller but more frequent “meals”, you will maintain a steady dose of energy instead of experiencing food comas. Don’t snack on fatty and sugar laden junk food though. You may get a short 30 minute burst of hyperalertness, but it’ll be quickly followed by a debilitating crash.

25. Enjoy a cup of tea.

In a recent study, University College London researchers noted that drinking a cup of tea 4-6 time a day reduces stress hormone levels in your body. The study’s results suggest “drinking black tea may speed up our recovery from the daily stresses in life.”

26. Splash some water on your face.

Just letting the cool water hit your face washes off the grime and stresses of the day. You could also jump in the pool or take a shower for the same effect. Showers stimulates the circulatory system and metabolism. Get wet to feel more energetic.

27. Stand up, stretch and take a couple of deep breaths.

Stretch your arms, back, legs, and neck. Take a deep breath through your nose, hold it, and let it out slowly and forcefully. Repeat several times. This will take 30 seconds and will be an instant fix. When you sit back down, you’ll have the clear head and fresh feeling needed to power through the tough/boring task in front of you.

28. Get your world organized.

When your world is organized, you don’t have to expend mental energy keeping track of a million things. Here’s how to take back control of your time and productivity:

    * The Getting Things Done (GTD) FAQ - Beginner’s guide to GTD
    * Zen to Done (ZTD): The Ultimate Simple Productivity System - Leo’s even simpler system
    * 7 Productivity Tips for People that Hate GTD

29. Look on the bright side.

A generally upbeat and optimistic outlook on life will keep your energy level up. Yes, the worst thing that can happen might actually happen, but giving it too much worry will only drain you. Look for the positive in every situation and you won’t be so tired.

30. Take a mini-vacation.

Take one day and just do whatever you want. No work, no chores, no errands. Enjoy your one full day of vacation, then come back to work more motivated and energetic.

31. Eat a satisfying breakfast but a light lunch.

A heavy lunch, especially one with lots of carbs or fat (like a burger combo) will hit you as soon as you get back to the office. And it’ll be a sluggishness that lasts to the end of the day. Eat a big breakfast instead. It provides the fuel you need for the day, at the time when your body needs it the most. Not only will you avoid the afternoon food coma, the big breakfast will make you more productive in the mornings. Double win.

32. Choose protein over fat or carbs.

Foods with lean (low fat) protein help you feel fuller for longer. It also prevents blood sugar spikes, giving you more steady energy. Lean protein foods include fish and other seafood, lean pork, or chicken breasts (”white meat”).

33. Shed a few pounds.

The things you do to lose weight — exercise, drink water, avoid simple sugars — are actions that also have a positive effect on your energy level. Even better, the actual loss of excess fat provides an energy boost of its own. You’ll feel “lighter” and things that use to make you breathless will now seem much easier. Losing weight provides a double-impact to boosting your energy.

But be careful with fad and/or crash diets. Cutting out too many calories (ie., energy your body needs) too fast will cause you to be even more tired. Take small steps, and make it a lifestyle change so you shed the fat for life.

34. Listen to tunes while you work.

It’s well known that our brain’s pleasure centers light up when we hear music. Throwing on the headphones and listening to any music you like while working will give you a productivity boost.

35. Start exercising.

If you have a fairly sedentary life, just the idea of starting an intense exercise program is exhausting. But if you go slow, literally taking one step at a time, you can go from being sedentary to becoming a runner just like Leo.

36. Eliminate stress.

Stress is draining. Sometimes it’s worth it, like when you’re on a deadline to delivery a big project. Sometimes it’s just a waste of energy. Leo says,

Certain things in our life just cause us to be more exhausted than others, with less value. Identify them, and cut them out. You’ll have much more energy and much less stress. Happiness ensues.

Here’s how to eliminate stress from your life.

37. Have more sex.

Talk about an endorphin rush! If you keep those endorphins flowing regularly, you’ll have more natural energy. Literally, more bounce to your step.

38. Move gym time to the morning.

A lot of people go to the gym after work. Try going to the gym in the morning instead to get energy that lasts all day. Sure, you’ll have to wake up an hour or two earlier, but you get that time back at night. That exercise in the morning gets the endorphins flowing, which keeps you happy and productive the rest of the day. By exercising in the morning instead of at night, you spend the same amount of time at the gym, but get the added benefit of having more energy at work.

39. Purge low-value tasks from your todo list.

If you have a ridiculously long todo list that is impossible to get all the way through, you’ll feel tired just thinking about the todo list. If you want to actually cross off tasks from your todo list, you’ll need to throw out the crap tasks that you don’t want/need to deal with. Either delegate those tasks, move them into a second “nice but not critical” list, or just admit that they’re probably never going to get done and move them to the “maybe/someday” list. Shortening your todo list to just the most critical, must-do tasks will give you the “energy” to start knocking out those tasks.

40. Avoid the mid-day cocktail.

If you want to function in the afternoon, avoid alcohol at lunch. Even if it’s just one beer. Alcohol’s sedative effects will take hours to recover from, killing the rest of your afternoon.

41. Get a massage.

Loosen up those tight muscles and you’ll feel more relaxed. A more relaxed you means a happier and more productive you. Trade a quick shoulder rub with a coworker after lunch to perk both of you up for the rest of the afternoon.

42. Dress up.

Feeling better about yourself has a magical way of giving you more energy. Put just a tad more effort into looking your best for work, and you’ll get compliments from coworkers that will make you feel better — and make you a perkier, more energetic worker bee.

43. Don’t drink yourself to sleep.

Alcohol keeps your body from entering deep sleep, so even if you get the same hours of sleep, you won’t feel as rested. Limit alcohol the hours before bedtime to get the best night’s sleep.

44. Get a thyroid test from your doctor.

If you are chronically fatigued, it may be a symptom of hypothyroidism. That’s when not enough thyroid hormone is produced, with fatigue as one of its symptoms. Visit the doctor if you’ve been tired for a long time and haven’t had a checkup in a while.

45. Take a walk outside.

Getting outside for some fresh air, a change of scenery, and a quick walk to get your blood going will do wonders for your mood and motivation. Seeing the sun is a signal to your body that it’s not bedtime yet.

46. Lower your blood pressure.

Besides being a risk factor for a heart attack, high blood pressure makes you fatigued. If you haven’t seen your doctor lately, go in and get your blood pressure checked.

47. Rotate yogurt into your diet.

Yogurt with live cultures keep your digestive system clean, which helps your body absorb all the nutrients from food. That makes you healthier and more energetic. Yogurt is also a good low-fat snack.

48. Have a laugh.

Laughter is great medicine for exhaustion. Make sure you laugh regularly to keep your mood up. Seek out funny people or subscribe to a daily email joke. I like the geeky comic xkcd for a quick smile. What’s your favorite quick funny pick-me-up?

49. Add more cardio to your gym time.

The aerobic exercise gets your blood pumping. It builds stamina and endurance, which is useful for both triathalons and neverending department meetings.

50. Take up yoga.

The stretching, slow controlled movements, and focus on breathing reduces tension (and stress). The benefits include better sleep, feeling more relaxed, and being mentally sharper.

51. Eat eggs.

When people have eggs (mostly protein) for breakfast, versus bagels (all carbs), they feel more energy and eat less at the next meal. Protein makes you feel fuller without feeling stuffed, and they provide a steady stream of energy for your body (versus the quick high and crash of carbohydrates). Eggs are a great for breakfast or as an addition to a lunch salad.

52. Get a good night’s sleep.

We need 7-8 hours of sleep to be fully rested. Consistently sleeping less than 6 hours a night builds up a “sleep debt” that is hard to recover from. If you’re getting enough sleep, it should take you up to 30 minutes to fall asleep. If you’re falling asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow (or while sitting at your desk), that’s a symptom of sleep deprivation.

53. Get more ginseng.

Ginseng is well-known to have energy boosting properties. It is an adaptogen, which means it build resistance to stress and boosts energy. A ginseng supplement or sipping tea with ginseng can help improve energy.

54. Socialize.

Turn off the Internet and go socialize with friends. Humans are social animals, and we need regular socializing to keep ourselves in peak health and energy.

55. Get on your toes.

Roll up and down on your toes. This stimulates your circulatory system, which will deliver much-needed oxygen and fuel (glucose) throughout your body. You’ll be more energized and sharper. You can do this right now.

What’s your secret for getting more energy? Share it in the comments!

希特勒为扭转二战局势曾秘密研制UFO

Tema: Be temos — julyli @ 11:02

As Hitler’s armies began to crumble on fronts as far apart as Stalingrad and North Africa, he turned in increasing desperation to his scientists to create a war-winning super-weapon。

The idea of building flying saucers to bomb London and even New York could have been just such a scheme。

  可怕的是,这个超级飞行器曾被下达命令—秘密空袭纽约和伦敦试图扭转二战局势。

The programme, under the command of SS officer Hans Kammler, was said to have made significant breakthroughs with their experiments, says a report in the German science magazine PM。

  这份机密文件是被德国科学杂志《PM》的一份报告中曝光的,项目由纳粹党卫军官员Hans Kammler负责。

It quotes eyewitnesses who believe they saw a flying saucer marked with the Iron Cross of the German military flying low over the Thames in 1944. At the time the New York Times had written about a ‘mysterious flying disc’ and published photos of the device travelling at high speeds over the city’s high-rise buildings。

The magazine says that the Germans destroyed much of the paperwork on their activities but in 1960 in Canada UFO experts managed to recreate the device which, to their amazement, ‘did actually fly’。

  德国科学杂志《PM》还透露,德军在战败后,曾经销毁了大部分关于UFO的文件。但是1960年加拿大UFO专家设法重建了一个,令人吃惊的是,这个长相奇怪的物体竟然飞了起来。

It was thus that Lady Marchmain found us when

He winked at us again. "Like when they asked Chevalier, How does it feel to turn eighty? And Chevalier says, How does it feel?" Studied pause. "I’ll tell you how it feels. Considering the alternative, it feels terrific!"

"Mel"

"Now, now, dearest. What’s another false alarm citation? Asi es la vida, you plays, you pays, we can afford it, denks Gott." Melville Abbot freed his hand and waved floppy fingers. His head lolled, but he managed another wink. "The main thing is everyone’s alive, like Chevalier said, when they asked him how does it feel to turn eighty." Wink. "And Chevalier says"

"Mel!" Jane lurched forward and grabbed his hand.

"Dearest"

"No jokes, Mel. Please. Not nowno more jokes."

Abbot’s eyes bugged. His crushed-crepe face bore the humiliation of a child caught masturbating.

"My wife," he said to us. "I’d say take her, but I wouldn’t mean it. Can’t live with ‘em, can’t live without State trooper stops a fellow on the highway, fellow says, I wasn’t speeding, Officer. Trooper says, Didja notice a mile back your wife fell outta the car? Fellow says, Oh, good, I thought I was going deaf."

Jane must have squeezed his fingers because he winced and said, "Ouch!" She moved around to the front of the wheelchair and kneeled before him.

he  had left a, quantity of papers - poems, letters, speeches, articles; to edit them, even for a restricted circle, needed tact and countless decisions in which the judgement of an adoring sister was liable to err. Acknowledging this, she had sought outside advice, and Mr Samgrass had been found to help her.

He was a young history don, a short, plump man, dapper in dress, with sparse hair brushed flat on an over-large head, neat hands, small feet, and the general appearance of being too often bathed. His manner was genial and his speech idiosyncratic. We came to know him well.

 It was thus that Lady Marchmain found us when, early in that Michaelmas term, she came for a week to Oxford. She found Sebastian subdued, with all his host of friends reduced to one, myself. She accepted me as Sebastian’s friend and sought to make me hers also, and in doing so, unwittingly struck at the roots of our friendship. That is the single reproach I have to set against her abundant kindness to me.  Her business in Oxford was with Mr Samgrass of All Souls, who now began to play an increasingly large part in our lives. Lady Marchmain was engaged in making a memorial book for circulation among her friends, about her brother, Ned, the eldest of three legendary heroes all killed between Mons and Passchendaele;

Fighting Crime by Reading Minds

Tema: Be temos — julyli @ 23:51

1.jpg

What if we could read the mind of a terrorist? Researchers at Northwestern University in Chicago say they have taken a step closer to that reality with a test that could uncover nefarious plans by measuring brain waves.

In a study published in the journal Psychophysiology, psychologists John Meixner and Peter Rosenfeld used electrodes to measure the brain waves of 29 undergraduates who had been told to mock-plan either a terrorist bombing in Houston in July, or a vacation in a different city in a different month. The researchers then presented the students with the names of various cities, methods of terrorist attack and dates. As they did so, they scanned the subjects’ brains with electroencephalography (EEG), which records electrical activity along the scalp produced by the firing of neurons. They watched for a particular brainwave — dubbed the P300, because it fires every 300 milliseconds — which signals recognition of something familiar.

"The P300’s amplitude is very large when you see an object that is rare and personally meaningful to you," Meixner says. "So the amplitude of P300 was large when we presented the word ‘Houston,’ the city where the attack was planned. In total we were able to identify 10 out of 12 ‘terrorists.’" The investigators also correctly matched 20 out of 30 crime-related details, such as types of explosives and specific sites and dates.

The P300’s potential as a method for confirming concealed information was first recognized in the 1980s. But while it has long been touted as a possible substitute for the polygraph lie detector test, it has yet to be used by law enforcement anywhere in the world — although Japan is experimenting with it. One of the reasons is that it becomes difficult to use if investigators do not know the information they are trying to confirm. For instance, in Meixner and Rosenfeld’s study, the researchers would have struggled had they not known that the city in which the attack was planned was Houston, since it would be only by luck or guesswork they would have included it in the sample list of names.

"The test has limited application," Rosenfeld admits. "In the case of anti-terrorism, you’d need to have some chatter and intel to know what you are looking for."

What’s more, the P300 is vulnerable to what scientists call "confounding factors." For instance, if the mock-terrorists in the study were raised in Houston, which was also the location of the attack, the researchers would not know for sure what was causing the P300 spike. This makes the test particularly unreliable once details of a crime or plot have been released to the public. Anyone who then read about a planned attack in Houston would have a spike at the name. The same false positive would be triggered if, say, a picture of a murder weapon had been released to the press and then was shown to a suspect.

But Meixner and Rosenfeld say that despite these shortfalls, the technology holds more potential than the polygraph, which is admissible in the courts of roughly half of American states but which is rarely used due its unreliability. The polygraph measures such parasympathetic responses as respiration and sweating, which can certainly be triggered by a lie, but can also result from any high-stress situation — including the mere experience of being interrogated by Abercrombie & Fitch a police officer.

While there is nothing that can correct for this problem with polygraphs, P300s can at least be made more accurate by increasing the number of details you show a suspect. Even people who follow the news very closely would not be likely to know every single detail of a crime, such as weapon, date, exact address of the crime and the victim’s clothing. But such details would be burned in the mind of the perp.

How far out is P300 as a viable law enforcement tool? Maybe not too far, judging by the company the researchers behind the new study have been keeping. Rosenfeld says the work was funded by the Defense Academy for Credibility Assessment — part of the Department of Defense — which trains federal polygraph operators. Certainly, even such friends in high places will not do much to win the P300 technique many friends among civil libertarians, who do not relish the specter of Big Brother peering into a private citizen’s mind. Rosenfeld counters thated hardy clothing  in some cases, the ugg Classic cardy civil liberties of suspects will in fact benefit, since a painless but comparatively reliable way of getting at the truth makes it harder to justify harsh interrogation techniques.

For his part, Rosenfeld would like to get past all these theoretical arguments and simply have the opportunity to put his technique to the test. "I say give me a chance to prove it," he laments. "I would really like to use this on some real perps."read more pls at:
